Since Kanazawa is along the Northeastern coast of the main island of Japan, it`s home to some of the freshest and most delicious fish in Japan. Kaizendon is a rice bowl dish with a variety of different raw fish and seafood on top. While at Ichiba sushi I tried a bunch of amazing seafood.
Omicho’s Market in Kanazawa, much like Nishiki Market in Kyoto is one of the town’s biggest fresh food markets. The small crowded streets are filled with vendors yelling about their best catch. Their stalls lined with freshly caught fish and crab. One thing I found really cool were all the crabs were blowing bubbles and squirming around so you could really tell how fresh everything was.
Ichiba sushi in Omicho market is probably one of the most well-known sushi places in the market and is a great place to sample some of Kanazawa’s fresh seafood. We suggest getting there right when it opens at 9:30 to get the freshest fish possible. They have “kaizendon” or seafood rice bowls as well as various types of sushi. You can also try Kanazawa’s specialty, “nodoguro” or blackthroat. We highly recommend you try that at least once while in Kanazawa. Prices vary depending on what you order but you can expect to pay around 1200 yen to 2400 yen per person, so pretty affordable for the quality fish and friendly service.
From Kanazawa station, you take the bus heading in the direction of Omicho Market and get off at Musashigatuji stop and it’s right inside the market! Really hard to miss.
