Japanese winters can be quite cold, very cold in fact. The main island can get as cold as -4 and it gets colder the more north go. To keep warm most Japanese people use heat packs known as Hokkairo. The are as small as a pack of tissues that you can put in your pocket, some are made of cloth and some are plastic. Usually you can buy these as a pack of 5 or 6, but you can also get them individually from convenience stores and drug stores throughout Japan. From personal experience I can tell you that in the winter months Hokkairo become extremely useful. Just having something to combat the extremely brisk winds of Tokyo city is something that is almost invaluable, I recommend Hokkairo to everyone who visits Japan between the months of November and February.
It is often very easy to get sick in the cities of Japan because of the mass population, germs get spread very very quickly so having something that keeps you warm can help fight off some of the problems you might come across whilst you are here during the winter.
If you want a lifestyle tip whilst in Tokyo; it might be tempting to turn on your heater whilst you are sat about in the house. But this is an extremely costly method of keeping warm. Something you can do is take 2 or 3 Hokkairo and put them in to fabrics and just wrap yourself up. This will save you money and keeps you warm for a nice amount of time without it being overbearing. So if you are planning to visit Japan don`t be discouraged by the cold temperatures, just buy yourself a hokkairo pop it in your pocket and go out to explore, this great city with your hands all warmed up.
