Published on 02.08.2016 Kenrokuen is one of the three best landscape gardens in Japan, and for good reason! It's a huge beautiful area filled with things to check out regardless of the season. We went to Kenrokuen to check out the "kouyou" or the autumn leaves. One of the the things about seasonal sightseeing is it really varies depending on the weather and temperature. Both the autumn leaves and cherry blossoms can be hard to catch considering how long they stay at their peak. Cherry blossoms much more difficult because they usually only last a week or two. The day before we went to Kanazawa, it was rainy pretty heavily, so I think that's why the colors weren't as vibrant as they couldve been. Many of the leaves were being cleaned off the gardens grounds, so we kind of missed out in that regard. I suggest you really do your research before traveling somewhere for seasonal sightseeing. While the garden wasn't as bright as full of autumn leaves as I'd hoped, it was still quite an amazing place. In the fall and winter the snow that falls is really heavy in Kanazawa due to all the moisture, so a lot of the trees have special ropes holding up the branches called "yukizuri" (literally meaning snow hanging). These ropes protect the tree branches from snapping under the weight of the snow.

Kenrokuen was developed by the Maeda clan from the early 17th century to the mid 19th century. It also has one of the oldest fountain in Japan that operates on natural water pressure. Regardless what season you go to Kenrokuen, you are sure to have a great time enjoying the seasonal colors.

Kenrokuen is also a stop along the tourist oriented Kanazawa Loop Bus (stop numbers LL9 and RL8) and the Kenrokuen Shuttle Bus (stop number S8). The one way ride from Kanazawa Station takes about 20 minutes and costs 200 yen (100 yen on weekends/holidays in the case of the Kenrokuen Shuttle Bus).
