Akarenga Soko or the Red Brick Warehouses in Yokohama are a great place for shopping and host a variety of events throughout the year, including Yokohama's huge Oktoberfest. It used to serve as the Customs Inspection House for Yokohama in the 1920s. It has since then been converted into a huge shopping area popular for family outings or dates. There are special events held throughout the year, including one of Japan's biggest Oktoberfests.
We actually checked out Akarenga Soko around Christmas time, so they had these really cute Christmas food and drink stands set up with Christmas decorations everywhere. It was really interesting to see both sides of Christmas represented with Santa Claus and Jesus decorations all over the place. Japan has a habit of taking aspects of holidays it likes and incorporating them into Japanese life. I really enjoy it most of the times, because I do get homesick, but I do not like how long they play the same 10 Christmas songs. Akarenga Soko is an awesome place to visit throughout the year, but especially in the fall and winter due to the amazing events they have at those times. There are events in spring and summer but I'd recommend checking it out later in the year.
