A quick little 'how-to' on riding trains in Tokyo! Although daunting at first, it's actually much easier than you think! By the end of your stay in Japan, you will fall in love with Tokyo's transportation system. Stations are very clean, and everything usually operates orderly, and on time. It's rare for a train to be even a few minutes late, although during rush hour and Friday nights, delays are not unheard of.
One of the best things about public transportation in Tokyo is the fact that you don't even have to have basic knowledge of Japanese to be able to use it effectively. Almost every sign and ticket machine is written in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese, so almost anyone can easily can find their way. The train conductors and station staff are also very helpful, and many of them speak English, so if you ever get lost, don't hesitate to ask for directions. You could even ask them to check your Japanese homework, and they would probably do it for you.
With the spread of smart phones, finding your way around Japan is even easier! All you need is google maps and you are good to go! And with the transportation system in Tokyo being so great you can get to almost any corner of the city. It really is that easy!
