Tofu-ya Ukai is a traditional restaurant situated in the Minato district of Tokyo, focusing on tradition over what could be seen as modern popularity. Tofu-ya Ukai has a lavish establishment that includes three traditional gardens, a river and it`s very own sake production rooms. This all comes to make one of the most beautiful restaurants in the Tokyo area. All the staff wear Kimono and also give you an explanation of the restaurant and the way they produce the Tofu and Sake that they sell there. The restaurant has a course menu instead of a normal Ala-carte menu, this may seem a little strange but that is in fact a very traditional way of doing things for the Japanese. Everything is planned to make the meal better, it is an art-form in itself, if you order the fish course like OkanoTV does in this video the course is formed around the flavours that come with the fish, you wouldn`t want to eat a type of Tofu that is meant to go with meat if you had ordered a vegetarian course right?
This all comes with price though, the starting main course is ￥10,000 which equals around about $100, however the fact that all of the food is seasonal and all of the Tofu is self produced it makes it worth it. Looking at the video you can see that the food itself is so delicate it is almost unreal. This is an experience of anyone in Tokyo; tourist or long time resident and if you can fit it into your schedule you definitely should do.
Tofu-ya Ukai can be found approximately 10 minutes from akebonobashi station in the Minato district of Tokyo.
