Japan is a rather closed off country, what they know of the western world is often learnt from TV, Movies or Magazines. But what do Japanese people think of Americans ? As foreigners we tend to learn a lot about other countries, Japan has a far more stereotypical view of other countries. America is one that they just don`t know well enough as most of the popular media comes from either L.A. or New York it means that is all they think about when you mention America to Japanese people.
Some people can see this to be racist or unworldly. Personally I feel the same way for the west thinking about Japan, not many people know much about Japan outside of Anime, robots or kanji. This isn`t exactly a bad thing it just means that maybe the image or have of one culture might not be completely correct.
Take for example a specific mental syndrome known as “Paris syndrome” a situation that happens in Japan where people are told how amazing and beautiful Paris is and that the people are the kindest people in the world. But when they save up an extremely high amount of money to go there they realize that it isn`t as amazing as they were told and they become extremely depressed. This is now combated slightly by the influence of the internet but the problem still stands that Japanese people are quite closed off in their minds and those who learn about America and the West are those who already had a interest in those countries already. Where as those who don`t really care, still carry the stereotypes they hear from their elders or what they see on TV.
This trend is not one that is easy to break away from but with every year Japan is becoming a more worldly country and trying its hardest to learn about other countries. This is most likely due to the upcoming Olympic games.
