Published on 04.27.2016 In Japan, especially in large cities, taxis are quite expensive compared to the public transportation. However, taxis are convenient and the only option when the public transportation stopped operating at midnight. If you have many luggages, it would be inconvenient to ride the trains because trains are usually full of people. To hail a taxi, you can go to a taxi stand or flag down at a location where it is safe to stop. You can tell whether a taxi is vacant or not by looking at the plate in the dashboard in the lower corner of the windshield. Usually, a red plate indicates that the taxi is vacant and the green plate indicates that the taxi is occupied. When you board a taxi, the vehicle’s left rear door is opened and closed automatically and is controlled by the driver. You should not force to open or close the door of taxi. Tipping to the taxi driver is not allowed and should be avoided. Also, if you do not speak Japanese or the place you want to go is not well-known, it is advisable to write the address in a piece of paper or it would be very helpful if you can point it out in the map. When using standard taxis, the fare typically starts about 600-700 yen for the first two kilometers and increase by around 80-90 yen for every additional 300-400 meters. Expressway toll fees during the trip are also added to the fare.
