“Geibikei Gorge” is one of the one hundred best sceneries in Japan located in Iwate prefecture. The Satetsu River eroded the surrounding limestone and created about a two kilometer gorge. The landscape of the steep cliff, which is over one hundred-meters high, is powerful and breathtaking.
Taking a boat trip is a well-known activity in Geibikei Gorge. A boatman controls boats called “Hirata Boat” with a pole where they make a round trip around the Geibikei Gorge, while introducing highlights to passengers. Geibikei Gorge is the only place that boatmen row a boat themselves and make a round trip around a river in Japan. You can enjoy beautiful natural landscapes while floating on a boatduring this 90-minute tour.
The view from the boat changes from season to season and has a soothing effect on those who witness it. You can enjoy fresh green in the spring, and beautiful autumn foliage in the fall. In addition to that, these boats are also “Chaseki Boat,” where you can experience Japanese tea ceremony on the boat, and can taste matcha tea. From December through February, they have a “Kotatsu Boat.” “Kotatsu” is a Japanese traditional heating system consisting of a heater under a table covered with quilted blanket. A hot pot dish on this Kotatsu boat is also served.
Additionally, people can hold a wedding ceremony on the boat. It is sure to be a memorable day; wearing Japanese traditional Kimono with beautiful landscapes will blessing newly-wed couples.
Halfway through the boat trip, people can try their luck throwing small stones called “Un-dama” aiming for the hole in the rock wall where is known as a spiritual spot. There are ten kinds of stones that has each meaning such as Fortune, Change, Congratulations, Love, Wish, Luck, Falling in love, Bond, Reward, and Money. You can choose five kinds of stones for one hundred yen. It is said that your wish will come true if you manage to land the stone into the hole.
The climax of the boat trip is a song called “Geibi Oiwake” sang by boatman. People will be moved by this old Japanese song, sung in such a magnificent landscape. “Geibikei Gorge” is a sightseeing spot that you can enjoy Japanese picturesque scenery on the boat.
