Thirsty? Hungry? Fancy a good book? A smoke?
Well, you can find all of that and more in vending machines across Japan. Vending machines in Japan are probably the one thing that really shocked me when I first came to Japan. The sheer number of them spread out across the country is absolutely crazy. Moreover, the diversity of goods offered inside these machines is so extreme that even after 3 years, I still often come across a unique vending machine to this day.
The most common vending machine in Japan is of course the drink vending machine. Even this common vending machine has some unique and rare products in them. Corn soup, clam chowder, and "pancake drink" are just a few interesting drink options that you may come across in Japan.
Two types of vending machines that really shocked me were the beer and cigarette vending machines. I always wondered how those machines were regulated and kept children from accessing them. Turns out the beer vending machines are often turned off after a certain time or carefully monitored, while the tobacoo ones are only accessible with a special card that you must register for.
There are many other different kinds of vending machines, some weirder than others (looking at you used panty vending machine). Be sure to check out some of the cool, delicious, or downright strange vending machines in Japan.
