Taiyaki is one of Japan’s oldest traditional dessert that comes in the form of a fish filled with red bean paste which is also known as azuki. Taiyaki is said to be a food originated from Imagawa Yaki.
Taiyaki was created around 100 years ago, and though the origin is unknown, the most common belief around the Japanese back then, was that the sea bream was expensive hence the Imagawa Yaki was shaped in such a way to make them feel like as if they are eating luxuriously. There is another saying that the Japanese word of sea bream means happy or prosperous, so by eating taiyaki will bring you luck.
Taiyaki has since became very common not only in Japan, but also in different countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and even in America! In addition, it now comes in various flavors such as cheese , chocolate and even matcha!
Taiyaki is also similar to the Imagawayaki, which are thick round cakes that are usually filled with azuki paste.
Usually, you will find owners sellers both the Taiyaki and Imagawayaki together!
