As the sun goes down, spectacular Christmastime illuminations sparkle among jumping fountains and warm lights running along a winding canal. These are the views you can enjoy when you visit Canal City Hakata, a shopping mall and entertainment area so large, that it's almost a city inside a city! Developed by the same American architects who designed Roppongi Hills and Namba Parks, Canal City is full of fantastically sweeping and imaginative structures, which make even walking through it a joy. This city-within-a-city isn't just for looking, though. It's also a shoppers' paradise and ideal spot for hanging out with friends or taking a date! There are over 250 shops, cafes, and restaurants, as well as an IMAX cinema, traditional theater, and a “ramen stadium,” which features popular ramen styles from across Japan, including (of course) Hakata ramen. If you fancy a stroll, a bite to eat, or are looking for some gifts for yourself or a loved one, you can find basically everything in this well-lit wonderland.
Canal City Hakata is about a 15-minute walk from Hakata Station, or a short ride on the 100-yen city loop bus. It's open every day from 10:00 to 21:00, with some variation in the shops. Most restaurants are open until 23:00.
