Iriomote and Ishigaki are two of the most remote islands in the Okinawa island chain of southern Japan. Reachable via daily ferries from the larger main islands, in recent years, they've become a green, eco-friendly haven for outdoor adventurers looking for sun and surf away from the bustling tourist crowds on Okinawa's main islands. This video, showing some of the open sea, rocky shores, and covered mangrove inlets of these islands, demonstrates just how untouched and beautiful the nature here is. Tours like the ones being offered by Satoru Yahata provide visitors looking for a unique experience to connect with nature an opportunity to do so in a way that is friendly to the environment and has a low impact on the native life there. Kayaking under your own power has a certain primal, ancient feel to it, and can bring an adventurous visitor to Okinawa just a little closer to the world around them.
The three locations seen in the video include Nakamagawa river, which is comprised of 160 hectares of mangrove forest and designated a National Treasure; Haemida Beach, a remote beach with fine, soft sand and calm waters, which make it perfect for swimming; and Barasu Island, which is a snorkeler's dream thanks to its abundant coral structures and colorful fish.
