Seasonal limited everywhere!
You can find ‘season limited special menus’ everywhere in Japan, not only in hamburger restaurants but also in family restaurants and convenience stores. Perhaps, this is because Japanese people treasure the change of the season.
Restaurant consultant Tomohiko Shirane analyses that because each hamburger chain promotes low price deals, customers in general just choose whichever is cheapest. It’s difficult be different from others, as they have to cap the cost of ingredients. In order to attract more customers, each chain promotes season limited special menus using better and more expensive ingredients. They compromise costs by serving those burgers as set menus with drinks and sides. Season limited special menus have to create buzz, so they are often unique and sometimes strange.
Those limited menus are easy to find; during promotion period, there will be posters outside and inside of restaurants. Try those burgers if you find one. The chances are you can get a delicious burger for a cheaper price or the experience of a very strange one, found only in Japan.
Victor and his friends had the ‘Aka Samurai chicken burger’ and ‘Aka Samurai beef burger’ in Burger King. They were part of the limited menu in the summer of 2015. Both patties and a slice of cheese were made with tomato powder to make them red. Unfortunately, they missed the ‘Black Samurai burgers’, which were made with bamboo charcoal, as they were promoted after the ‘Red’ items.
Try Japan’s limited edition burgers
Did you know that most hamburger restaurant chains have a country limited menu? Take Turkey’s Kebab sandwich, the ‘Mac Turco’, or the German sausage burger.
Here’s the list of Japan only burgers:
McDonalds: Teriyaki Mac Burger (pork patty and lettuce with teriyaki sauce), Fillet-O-Shrimp (a crispy shrimp portion and lettuce)
Burger King: Fresh Avocado Whopper (beef patty, avocado and mayonnaise)
Wendys: Avocado Wasabi Burger (beef patty, avocado and Japanese style wasabi sauce)
Try Japanese-only burger chains
Mos Burger: the pioneer of Japanese-style burger. Their Teriyaki Chicken burger is excellent! It comes with a chicken fillet, not patty, with lots of lettuce, mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce. The Ebi Katsu Burger comes with a deep fried shrimp portion, lots of shredded cabbage and mayonnaise. Rice burgers use grilled rice instead of buns. For vegetarians, they have a range of burgers with a patty made from soy beans.
Freshness Burger: an upmarket burger chain. 4 types of fillet chicken burgers are offered (lemon salt, crispy, hot crispy and teriyaki). More choices in drinks including beer.
First Kitchen: many interesting burgers, such as Tatsuta-age fried chicken burgers, Tonkatsu burgers, Grilled beef burgers, and Tandoori chicken sandwich.
