Saizeriya; Italian dishes under 500yen
Saizeriya is an Italian themed family style restaurant chain established in 1973. They are very popular especially among young people for their low price; apart from few exceptions, their dishes cost less than 500yen. Saizeriya now has over 900 restaurants nationwide.
What is ‘spaghetti tarako sauce’?
Alex chose ‘spaghetti tarako (salted cod roe) sauce’ (399yen) in this video. You might never have eaten this dish as this is one of “Japanese style” pasta dish. Although we love Italian pasta dishes in Japan, some of us couldn’t resist experimenting cooking pasta with Japanese ingredients and flavours. ‘Spaghetti tarako sauce’ was born in 1967 in Tokyo and has become popular ever since. A vacuum packed ‘tarako sauce’ is widely available in supermarkets.
Other popular dishes in Saizeriya
Doria with meat sauce (299yen) Although this dish is described as Milanese, doria was originated in Japan which is layers of cooked rice, white sauce, cheese and meat sauce baked in an oven. Not only tasty, it’s quite filling despite the bargain price. No wonder it has been the most popular dish for last 40 years.
Grilled escargots (399yen) French delicacy with a price of family restaurants. Order ‘putti focaccia’ together for only 79 yen. Great with their ultra-low priced Italian wine.
Grilled chicken with vegetable salsa (499yen) The main reason of the popularity of this menu is the vegetable salsa with garum sauce, a Mediterranean sauce flavoured with fish sauce. It is popular for people who prefer lighter dish and has been on menu for 25 years.
Thirsty? Go for ‘drink bar’.
Like many other family restaurant chain, Saizeriya offers ‘drink bar’ which is drink as much soft drink as you like system. An empty glass is served and you go to ‘drink bar’ corner and fill up the glass with drink of your choice by yourself. At Saizeriya, ‘drink bar’ is 280yen on its own, 190yen with meal and 110yen for children.
Lunch for 500yen!
Saizeriya offers lunch menu for mere 500yen between 11a.m. and 3p.m. on weekdays. There are 9 dishes to choose from and every dish comes with salad and soup. You can add ‘drink bar’ for just 110yen.
‘Choi-nomi’ at family style restaurants.
Most of family style restaurants offer ‘choi-nomi’ (a casual drink) nowadays, but Saizeriya is the pioneer of this style. You can enjoy directly imported Italian wine for only 100yen per glass with side dishes ranging from 199yen to 399yen. Unlike bars, there is no table charge, that means no nasty surprise!
