In northeastern Japan, near the city of Shiroishi in the Miyagi prefecture, there is a mysterious villiage that is home to over a hundred foxes. The Miyagi Zao Fox Villiage, or as it is affectionately known as the "Fox Villiage," has over 6 different fox species, and is very popular with domestic and overseas tourists alike.
The Fox Villiage is owned by a husband and wife, who originally ran a dairy farm where they kept foxes. During Japan's bubble economy, they released their foxes by creating this zoo for them to inhabit. Fox Villiage has ever since been a popular destination for children and fox-lovers to spend some relaxing time these mysterious creatures.
Initally, there was some concerns about the risk of infection of diseases such as Echinococcus from the foxes in the villiage. However, since the villiage's opening in 1990, all animals are artifically bred, and antiparasitic processing and sterilization is carried out regularly. This is done to keep both the foxes and visitors to the villiage happy and healthy, so there is little risk in visiting the park.
Fox villiage is separated into two parts: a petting zoo-like area and the main villiage. In the petting zoo, there are goats, miniature horses and rabbits to play with, as well as foxes of course. When you are done in the petting zoo, you exit out into the main part of the villiage. In this area, foxes roam free, and it is so expansive you feel as if you are really out in the wilderness, hanging out with some foxes. There are also places to buy treats for the foxes for about 100 yen. In this area, you can get very close and personal to the foxes, but keep in mind that they are still wild animals.
If you are looking for a fun and unique experience while in Miyagi, definitely check out Zao Fox Villiage!
