You can find these delicious steamed pork buns in the Kansai region of Japan. They are produced by a company called 551 Horai (Go-Go-Ichi-Horai). 551 Horai was established by three men in1945 in Namba, Osaka. The word “Horai” is a word of Chinese origin meaning “paradise.”
Horai’s famous steamed pork buns were invented in 1946. They weigh 130g and fill our stomachs and warms our hearts their juicy filling made of pork and onions. These pork buns are 551 Horai’s most famous product, with their shops selling an average of 140,000 of them a day. 551 Horai’s steamed pork buns are famous in the Kanto region as well, albeit difficult to find. Many people will buy them as souvenirs when visiting Kansai.
At first, the company started as just “Horai,” but the three men who established it thought that the name was missing a certain something to make it stand out. The three men thought over and over, until one day, one of the three looked at a cigarette package named 555, which he used to smoke. He liked the idea of having a 3-digit number as a name, and decided to go with 551 because the main offices found number had 551 in it. The three men wanted “Horai” to be known not only in Japan, but also overseas, so the numeral name had an added benefit of being able to be understood by anyone in the world, not just people who speak Japanese.
Today, 551 Horai is invested in the idea of providing fresh meals to people. Each steamed pork bun is made fresh in the store. 551 Horai also makes chilled pork buns for people who would like to enjoy them at home, or send them to friends or family. They do not however, sell frozen pork buns, because that goes against their idea of selling only fresh products. 551 Horai proudly provides delicious, all hand-made steamed pork b
