Kabukichō is an entertainment and red-light district in Shinjuku, Tokyo. It is home to numerous host and hostess clubs, love hotels, karaoke, shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. As one of the world’s largest night spots, Kabukicho is also known as a sleepless town with glittering neon everywhere and busy-crowded streets. The streetscapes are covered in a soft pink color, intensifying their beauty and creating an anime-like image.
The district's name comes from the plan to build a performance hall for kabuki after the town was destroyed during the bombing of Tokyo in 1945. Although the plan was never realized, the name still stuck and during 1960s the town started building rows of eating and drinking establishments. The largest entertainment district in East Asia is visited by both several domestic and foreign tourists every year. Visitors can enjoy various activities there including a stroll around the area, taking in the bright lights, sounds and smells, trying cuisine from different regions of Japan and throughout the world in various types of restaurants; as well as immersing themselves in live music in bars or having some fun in pachinko parlors.
The Shinjuku Koma Theater has been known as a landmark in Kabukicho and it hosts numerous concerts and other performances by top stars. Another must-visit place is Tokyo Robot Restaurant in which a live show takes place featuring real robots and gorgeous Japanese dancers. Guests are charged with a fee of 5,000 JPY covering a bento box and a one and a half hour stage show.
Kabukicho is a safe area, however, visitors are advised to be aware of touts who try to lure you into hostess clubs and certain bars. Also, a few clubs and bars may overcharge for drinks. Therefore, keeping yourself in check at all times is necessary to avoid getting in troubles when you are drunk.
Kabukicho is located north east of the enormous Shinjuku Station complex. Take the east exit out of Shinjuku Station and head north towards Seibu Shinjuku Station to start enjoying all the Kabukicho fun.
