Relationships are hard for every couple. A relationship with a Japanese guy is even harder because it is kind of breaching barriers of two distinct cultures which is complicated and requires a lot of effort, patience and understanding from both sides.
One of issues that comes up with a Japanese husband or boyfriend is that they do not usually show affection in public since Japanese culture is very private. If western guys are used to physical affection like hugging, kissing, hand-holding, etc, Japanese guys are probably too embarrassed to show that. Because of this trait, whilst on a date with Japanese guy; he may not make a move like giving you a goodnight kiss but this does not mean he is not into you.
Keeping things in secret
Japanese guys often do not share that they are in relationship. They will not introduce their non-Japanese girlfriends to friends and family until they plan to get married in the near future. However, for non-Japanese girlfriends, keeping things private between the two make them feel unsecure about the relationship. They may start wondering why their Japanese boyfriends are not proud to show off their girlfriends.
Difficulty in communication
Communication is another issue that occurs between interenational couples. Apart from the barrier they may find in language difference, cultural difference seems to be the biggest obstacle to overcome for better understanding and communication. Many Japanese guys are not used to directly expressing what they want or how they feel but instead they expect their partners to understand their thoughts and feelings. This requires the couple to learn about alternate methods of communication and understanding to make their relationships work. Accordingly, one has to teach the other a little bit of their communication culture.
Putting work before girlfriend
Japanese guys are well known for devotion to job and they are usually complained about putting work before girlfriends which makes non-Japanese girls to feel a bit ignored and not important.
However, despite the difficulties that are inevitable in any Japanese guy and non-Japanese girl relationship, there are always ways to work it out to make a stable and understanding relationship as long as both sides really work at it and love each other. At the end of the day, language or cultural differences are just challenges that make your relationship stronger once you can overcome.
