Published on 06.03.2016 In Japan, fireworks and summer are inseparable. In a country where hundreds of impressive firework shows take place throughout July and August all over the country, it just isn't summer without enjoying as many fireworks as possible. In Japan, people take fireworks very seriously. Almost every city in Japan hosts its own firework show, and in bigger cities like Tokyo, there are multiple fireworks shows per area. No matter where you live in Japan, there is guarantueed to be a firework show taking place near you during the summer months!

Many people wear "yukata" (a kimono worn during the summer) when they go to firework shows in Japan. It is not uncommon to see couples wearing yukata attending the shows together. Many young Japanese people, have an "akogare," or a yearning to dress up in a yukata and go to a firework show with their partner. Firework shows in Japan can be quite a romantic thing to see on your date.

Some of the bigger fireworks shows in Japan launch over 20,000 fireworks. These shows are quite long, and often last up to 2 hours. They are normally held on riverbanks or at stadiums, anywhere where there is enough sky to enjoy them fully. The location where the shows take place often get very crowded, as so many visitors go to see them. It is highly recommended to arrive early in the afternoon, as early as 14:00, to secure a space for your party to view the show from. Most people usually mark their place with a tarp, that they sit on when watching the show.

Besides fireworks, many people set up stalls and sell food and snacks during firework shows. You can normally find all of the traditional food common at fesitvals in Japan at these firework shows, making them more like "firework festivals" rather than just "shows."

If you are fortunate to be in Japan during the summer, be sure to attend a firework show, as the quality of the fireworks are sure to amaze.
