The seemingly chaotic map of the area looked daunting at first, but the sheer beauty of the place would make even getting lost a welcome treat. To travel through that historic and beautiful area would be an excellent way to experience both the past and present at the same time. Old buildings with new shops, all well balanced and maintained to such a state of perfection that no matter where you point your camera, a picture worthy of an award could be taken. Not only the buildings, but the trees and surrounding woodland is gorgeous. Not to mention the interlocking stone pathways which have probably been here for centuries. A flawless meld of human design and natures blessing all in one area. The shrines also contribute greatly to the appeal of Higashiyama, adding a touch of religion and culture into the mix. It is surprisingly clean for an area that has so many tourists and people all over the place. The people living and working there are doing a tremendously good job in preserving the location and its attractions. To walk where the old samurais and big personalities from the times long past have walked is deeply humbling and yet fascinating at the same time.
