As one of the biggest and most marathons in Japan, Tokyo Marathon sees over 30,000 people running through the huge metropolitan area of Tokyo. A massive herd of people running through the tall skyscrapers of the several Tokyo districts looks like something out of a movie.
The Tokyo Marathon is usually held around the month of February, but to even participate in the event you must send in an application by August. If there are too many applicants, the runners are chosen via lottery. So even if you apply to run in the marathon, you may not be able to participate. However, it is said that it is easier for foriegners to participate in the marathon than Japanese. You may apply online and the price of the full marathon is about 10,000 yen or $100 USD.
The marathon has a time limit of about 7 hours and the course takes participants all over Tokyo. It typically starts in Shinjuku and winds all through to Tokyo finally finishing near Tokyo Station.
One of the most interesting things about the race is the participants. Many of the people running in the race choose to wear unique and crazy outfits. So don't be surprised when you see a wild Pikachu or Mario running down the streets of Tokyo.
