Published on 06.07.2016 “Beautiful Japan” (or Utsukushiki Nippon) is one of the sections of Japan Archives site which are aimed to introduce the wonders and beauty of Japan. The point is to make people more deeply understand and feel something new and unique about this country. A great number of videos shows the natural scenery of the year’s four seasons, traditional culture, festivals in different destinations of Japan.
With regard to Gifu Prefecture, “Beautiful Japan” offers stunning videos of UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go, Ena City and the Iwamura Castle Ruins, and Ena Valley. The crystal and vivid colors in each and every video are believed to give viewers a sense of natural beauty.
Amou Prefecture Natural Park is a place where people can find a paradise of trees and flowers. Amou Mountain Pass is located on the border between Kawai Town, Hida City and Shirakawa Village, Ono County. However, it is cannot be accessed due to heavy snow for half of the year.
Visiting Amou Mountain Pass, people can experience a mysterious nature with a primeval beech forest spearing around a swamp, a group of giant katsura trees called Katsura Gate, Kidaira marsh, fields with clumps of mizabashou flowers, and Mt. Mominuka.
Visitors can see seasonal flowers such as mizubashou, nirinsou, sankayou and nikkoukusuge from June (right after snow has melted) until mid of Octorber. Then the beauty of multicolored autumn leaves from Octorber is also worth viewing.
From the trailhead, it takes approximately 40 minutes to walk a distance of 1.1 kilometer to reach Amou Marsh. After that, branch of Karatani is 10 more minutes walking. From here, spending 10 minutes walking will lead to mizubashou place, or 70 minutes - equivalent to 1.4 kilometer, to Kidaira Marsh, or about 2 hours - 2.3 kilometers, to Mominuka mountain.
How to approach:
Approximately 50 minutes by car from Hida-Furukawa Station on the JR Takayama Line.
Cross the Kawai Bridge in Kawai-cho, Komukari district, proceed along Route 360 19 kilometers (approx. 30 minutes) from Kawai Bridge toward Shirakawa-go by car.
A parking lot and restroom are located at trailhead of the Amou Mountain Pass.
