Located in the pacific ocean south of mainland Japan, Okinawa is the largest island in the Ryukyu island chain, and one of the most popular destinations in all of Japan, and from watching this video, it's not hard to see why! Although considered to be one of Japan's 47 prefectures, Okinawa is home to a rich culture that is unique to the island. It even has its own UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed as "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu."
Okinawa enjoyed independance from Japan until it was formally annexed in 1879. From that period onward, Okinawa experienced both rapid modernization, and the terrors of the second world war. After the war, Okinawa become a territory of the United States of America, until it was returned to Japan on May, 15th 1972.
Okinawa is Japan's own "Land of Eternal Summer." Okinawa features a variety of things to do, but it is most famous for its pristine beaches and clear waters that are perfect for diving. The waters, as illustrated in the above video, really are crystal-clear! The waters are so transparent, that it is said you can see down to the bottom from the surface. These kinds of tropical waters make the perfect habitat for coral reefs, and a beautiful variety of colorful fish like in "Finding Nemo!" With plenty of sites that are shallow enough for snorkeling, you don't have to be a seasoned diver to enjoy the waters of Okinawa.
Okinawa is just a 2 hour and 40 minute flight from Tokyo, making it easily accessible at any time during your stay.
