If you love cats, then you should definitely check out Tashirojima, or "Cat Island," in the Miyagi prefecture. This small island is home to hundreds of stray cats. It's said that the cats were originally brought to the island to help keep the mouse population in check, however their numbers quickly multiplied. In the past 20 years, the small island's population has been reduced by over half, and there are now more cats then people on the island.
Cat Island" first gained its popularity when a couple whose hobby is fishing, quit their jobs and moved from Sendai to Tashirojima in 2004. They started a bed and breakfast, and began writing a blog about fishing news and their inn. Eventually the island was introduced on several Japanese television shows as an "island with a lot of cats" and the couple shifted the focus of their blog to the cats. In recent years, the island has been featured in Japanese media more and more, and even a movie was filmed about one of the feline inhabitants of the island. Thanks to its recent media attention, the small island with its aging population blew up in popularity, and became the tourist attraction it is today.
The island is accessed via the Ajishima Line ferry and takes about 50 minutes to reach from the mainland. There are very few amenities on the island, besides a few small privately run lodges. Most notable is the lack of any convenience stores or ATMs on the island, so it is important that those planning to visit take precaution.
