Does life in the big city have you feeling down? Do you need a break from the concrete jungle to enjoy some beautiful Japanese nature? Well you're in luck! Mount Takao, located in Hachijoji City in Tokyo, is a wonderous natural treasure trove located just an hour from downtown Tokyo!
Compared to Mount Fuji, Mount Takao is a small mountain, standing at just 600 meters tall. However it is because of its small stature that it is able to maintain such a wide range of wildlife species. Although you may not think it due to it being so close to Tokyo, Mount Takao is extremely rich in wildlife, making it the pefect location for a day trip or getaway. There are 1320 plant species, 5,000 insect species, 150 types of birds, in addition to wild monkies and boars roaming the mountain. Mount Takao also holds the title of the "Most Climbed Mountain in the World," with over 2.6 million annual visitors, according to the Mount Takao Information Center.
Mount Takao has 8 hiking courses, with the most popular being trail #1 (the Omotesando Course), which is about 3.8km long. This trail runs from Kiyotaki Station and Sanroku Station at the foot of the mountain, all the way to the Visitor Center at the peak. Numorous attractions can be found on trail #1, including an observation deck and Yakuoin, an ancient Buddhist temple built in the year 744. If it's your first time visiting Mount Takao, trail #1 is probably a safe bet for gettign your best experience possible.
Mount Takao is a great place to escape the stress and fuss of the big city. It is ideal to visit Mount Takao during the second half of November, when the autumn leaves are in their full glory and the mountain forests are at their most beautiful. However, this is also when when the site is the most crowded, so please take care.
