Japan often imports various traditions and holidays from other countries. One in particular that is quite different in Japan is Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day in the States is usually a holiday where couples have romantic dinners or exchange gifts.
In Japan, however, Valentine's Day is a holiday in which women give the guy they like chocolates. Seem unfair? Well, don't worry, there is another holiday on March 14th called White Day. During White Day guys return the favor with chocolates of their own.
Valentine's Day and White Day are both pretty big commercial holidays, so you will see chocolate from big companies like Meiji and Ghana all over department stores. There are a large variety of shapes, sizes, and prices of chocolate, however, many people opt to make their own chocolate.
People also give their friends chocolate as well and this is called "tomo-choco" or friend chocolate. If you are in Japan during Valentine's Day, try some of the yummy chocolate that can be found anywhere.
