Since the 2003 Disney Pixar hit movie "Finding Nemo" there has been a boom in snorkling and diving both in Japan, and overseas. Many tourists who come to Okinawa want to experience the underwater wonders of the Ryukyu islands, and it's no mystery why! Not only is Okinawa is the only place in Japan where it is warm enough to go snorkeling all year long, but there are also many underwater wonders that can only be found in Okinawa!
The waters of Okinawa are famous for their clarity. The crystal clearness of the water is really apparent in areas like Ishigaki island presented in the video, where you can see down to the bottom of the ocean from above. It's even possible to see the large numbers of manta circling around the coral reef, without even getting in the water!
Air temperatures in Okinawa during the winter months average around 15° low with a high of 20°. During the summer air temperatures reach around 30°, with the cool sea breeze keeping it from getting any hotter. Even during the winter months, water temperature tends to stay around 21° to 23°, making it possible to dive or snorkle comfortably with a wet suit. With the sea beckoning all year round, ripe with unique waterlife to underwater ruins, Okinawa truly has it all.
