Jigokudani near Nagano is home to one of the cutest attractions in Japan, the Macaque snow monkeys! Jigokudani means hell valley and is often used for valleys in Japan with volcanic activity. The Jigokudani Monkey park allows visitors to watch these adorable little red faced monkeys bath in a natural hot spring. The monkeys are extremely accustomed to humans and will also be seen along the path to the hot spring. However, because these monkeys are still wild animals, visitors are prohibited from touching or feeding the monkeys. The best time to go see these cute furry bathing monkeys is in the winter months of January or February.
There are also a few other notable sight seeing places in the nearby area. Matsumoto Castle is one of the most beautiful and unique castles in Japan. Unlike many other castles in Japan, Matsumoto Castle is a "hirajiro" (literally means flatland castle). Most castles are built on hills or mountain sides for the strategical advantage.
Also known as Crow Castle for it's black color, Matsumoto Castle is a popular cherry blossom spot in the spring. It is also the second oldest and is rated the second best castle in Japan right behind Himeji Castle.
Zenkoji Temple is probably one of the most important temples in Japan because it was one of the first temples to have a image of buddha inside. Sadly, no one is allowed to view this image of Buddha.
If you make a trip out to Nagano, there are plenty of interesting traditional places to see.
