2016.03.31に公開 As a tourist, you try to stretch your hard earned dollar to the maximum wherever you go, and this would include checking out the free stuff and perks that tourists get to enjoy in a particular country. Over in Japan, accommodation and cab rides might be expensive, but this does not mean that there are no free sights and experiences offered. The Arts Council Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture) is currently playing host to a slew of short programs which ensure that tourists are able to obtain first-hand experience of traditional culture and performing arts around tourist attractions in Tokyo.
Programs for foreign visitors
Throughout the different locations around Tokyo, the Arts Council Tokyo will ensure that the programs offered are able to build a connection with tourists, ensuring a deeper understanding as it merges both hands-on experience alongside a viewing of various performances. Over at the Edo-Tokyo Museum, there is an Engei Workshop that is held every Saturday. The Engei Workshop will introduce traditional Japanese entertainment to the masses, where it also involves the likes of paper cutting, Kyokugei (traditional acrobatics) and Wazuma (traditional magic). Registration is limited to just 50 people per workshop on a first come, first served basis, and it is free, although you would need to pony up the 600 yen entrance fee beforehand. The Edo-Tokyo Museum is open every day except Monday from 0930 to 1730 hours, although Saturdays would see it close a couple of hours later than normal.
Over at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center, you will be able to indulge in a traditional Japanese dance workshop every Sunday. Knowledge that takes a lifetime to master will not be handed down to you in a single dance workshop, but at the very least you would have gotten a brief idea on how things were like back in the olden days when samurai roamed the land as enforcers for their lord.
The Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center is easily accessible from the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, the Toei Asakusa Line, the Tobu Isesaki Line and the Tsukuba Express, where all of them would be a one to 10 minute walk from the Asakusa Station. Open every day from 0900 to 2000 hours, you even have free Wi-Fi for your convenience, allowing you to post Facebook updates and your selfies on the spot so that family and friends back home will be jealous of you having a blast!
